1911 – 2003

LEWISTON – Christos Orestis, 92, of Lewiston, died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 10.

He was born in Nashua, N.H. on Aug. 19, 1911, a son of Vasalios and Katherine Orestis. He moved to Lewiston with his family in 1922 and had been a resident here since then. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1930 and was president of his class. He was a graduate of Bentley College.

He served in the United States Army in World War II and was in the Pacific theater. Returning to Lewiston after the war, Mr. Orestis was an accountant with his own practice. He was director of the U.S. Census of 1950 for the Second Congressional District of Maine, and returned to his accounting practice after the census was complete. He retired in 1981.

He was married to Cecile Langelier on Sept. 5, 1940. They were married for 61 years. She predeceased him on April, 16, 2001.

He was a lifetime member of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks and was Secretary of the Lodge for 20 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 22. He served on the Lewiston Board of Education from 1975 to 1980 and was chairman in 1980.

He was a lifelong avid fisherman, a passion he passed on to his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He was a man of honor, integrity, and industry. He believed in hard work, close family, and living a good life in the best sense of the word. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Lewiston.

He is survived by two sons, John and his wife Barbara Crowley of Portland, and William and his wife Alison of Greenland, N.H.; seven grandchildren, Christos and his wife Grace of Falmouth, Stephanos and his wife Cecilie of Almaty, Kazakhstan, Kelsey Anne of Rangeley, Nikolaos of Rye Beach, N.H., Kristian Leigh of Rye, N.H., Alexandros and Hannah, both of Greenland, N.H.; a step grandchild, Joshua Niss of Portland; two great-grandchildren, Christos and Maximilian, both of Falmouth; a sister, Mary Moscovis of Lewiston; his sisters-in-law, Toni Orestis of Auburn, Doris Orestis of Litchfield, Geraldine Brimigion of Lewiston, Doris Langelier of Lewiston, and Sally Langelier of Wakefield, Mass.; his brother-in-law, Lionel Langelier and his wife Claire of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Alexander and George.
