LIVERMORE FALLS – Directors officially included the Cedar Street Learning Complex as part of the SAD 36 campus Thursday, putting it off limits to smoking.

The action came late in their meeting after a question from Livermore Director Rod Newman, who suggested that directors smoking in front of the building reduced the board’s credibility.

Several board members frequently gather outside the building to smoke and socialize during breaks in the meeting.

“How can we discipline a student for smoking on campus when we do it? Either make an (smoking) area of stop it,” he said.

“Rod’s point is well taken,” admitted Superintendent Terry Despres, a smoker who admitted he has a bad habit. “We already have a policy; we just need to declare this school property,” he said.

A designated area was suggested by some but abandoned when Livermore Director Ashley O’Brien said there should be no smoking for all.

“We’re the center of policy, we should follow the policy,” he said.

Volunteers assisting in the schools and on the grounds will have to be notified of the policy, the board noted.

Despres said he had received only three calls about holding school last Monday, saying that it was a safe day of travel.

He announced the resignation of Ginger Stoneton, a technician in special services at the high school, as of Dec. 3, and said the position is being filled by a long-term substitute.

There will be no workshop day on Dec. 22, because there is no money to support it, but the last one planned will take place in the spring as scheduled.

The trip to Washington by high schoolers has been canceled because the travel company wanted more money up front than had been raised.

Approval was given to a policy governing community use of school facilities and grounds.

Three directors working on the Food Service Committee are looking into separate issues. Jackie Knight will study meal planning, when they are served and what they are served.

Betsy DuBois will look into facilities, equipment, the business plan and finances. Newman will look at the organization structure and the organizing of nutrition needs.

In addition, Chairwoman Denise Rodzen and Co-Chairwoman Jean Tardif will serve as floaters on the sub-committees.
