PARIS – Oxford County commissioners agreed Tuesday to split costs for fixing soil erosion problems along Sunday River Road.

Oxford County Soil and Water District Director Jeff Stern said the district would use grant money to pay half of the $3,140 cost. The county’s contribution could come in the form of labor and materials, he said.

The area needing attention is a short stretch of road from the Newry town line to the Twin Bridges, Stern said.

“In heavy spring rains and snow melt, so much water comes down, it overwhelms the ditch,” he said. The overflow dumps into a brook that feeds the Sunday River, affecting the river’s water quality.

The project will consist of enlarging the ditch and stabilizing it with an erosion control blanket on the right side of the road, said Stern. There will be no need to change the road’s location.

Stern said doing improvements at such a highly visible location will allow people to see that steps are being taken to minimize soil erosion into the Sunday River. The work will be done this summer.
