1916 – 2003

NEW SHARON – Nellie Makepeace, 87, died at her home on Dec. 17, after a long illness.

She was born in Industry, on Sept. 8, 1916, to Garfield and Edith Millett Rackliff. She was one of 12 children raised by them.

She resided in Hanover, until she moved to Weeks Mills in New Sharon in 1942. Her husband, Leo McPherson, died in 1949. In 1955, she married George Makepeace and later moved to the village.

She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Church and a past member of the Grange and Eastern Star.

During her lifetime she worked making apple boxes each summer at Wright’s Lumber Mill until 1950, when she went to work at Thompson Tennis Factory in New Sharon. She worked there for 11 years. Then she went to work for G.H. Bass Co. After 13 years at Bass, she retired at the age of 62. She enjoyed many years of travel and family fun with husband, George until he died in 1987.

She is survived by four children, Donna Tracy and husband Albion of Farmington, Nora Thombs and husband Marshall of New Sharon, Gary McPherson and wife Genene of Maryland, Joyce McPherson of New Sharon; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey and Scott McPherson, Peter, Bruce and David Tracy, Sherie Karkos and Norman and Kathy Thombs; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; two sisters, Nora Johnson and Betty Butterfield; and four sisters-in-law, Dorothy McPherson, Mae McPherson, Eleanor Rackliff and Ethelyn Rackliff.

She was predeceased by husbands, Leo McPherson and George Makepeace; a son, Garfield; her parents; all nine brothers; and one sister.
