Brendan Shanahan drops in the game-winner in overtime.

DETROIT – Brendan Shanahan scored with 1:09 left in overtime to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.

Pavel Datsyuk scored his 19th goal with 18.8 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra period, giving the Red Wings a chance to win their sixth straight at home. Brett Hull extended his point streak to 12 games with an assist on the tying goal.

Henrik Zetterberg, in his first game since breaking his left leg on Nov. 3, had a goal and two assists. He skated with the puck from the left circle to the right circle, then fed Shanahan with a perfect pass just below the left circle for the winner.

Curtis Joseph improved to 4-1 in his fifth straight start. He made 26 saves, including two in the final seconds of regulation.

Joseph has been playing regularly because Dominik Hasek has been out with a groin and Manny Legace has been slowed by a knee injury.

The Red Wings have been trying to trade Joseph since Hasek ended his retirement this summer.

They have put him on waivers twice, but no team has been willing to take him and his $8 million salary.

Capitals 2, Panthers 2

SUNRISE, Fla. – Stephen Weiss scored a power-play goal midway through the third period to give the Florida Panthers a 2-2 tie with the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Valeri Bure also scored, and Roberto Luongo made 25 saves for Florida, which has won only one of its last 10 games.

Bates Battaglia and Peter Bondra scored for Washington, and Maxime Ouellet, who shut out Atlanta on Tuesday night in his first start of the season, made 20 saves.

Washington played without right wing Jaromir Jagr, sidelined by a thumb injury. The Capitals are 2-1-1 under new coach Glen Hanlon, who replaced the fired Bruce Cassidy on Dec. 10.

Weiss scored on Florida’s first shot on goal in the third period, tipping in Mike Van Ryn’s slap shot from the point.

Bondra gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 4:03 of the third on the Capitals’ only shot of the period when he tipped Matt Pettinger’s pass into the open net on a two-on-one.

A mistake by Ouellet gave Florida a 1-0 lead at 6:20 of the first period.

Stars 3, Canucks 1

DALLAS – Bill Guerin scored the tiebreaking goal with 10:09 remaining in the Dallas Stars’ 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

Dallas, 2-0-1 in its last three games, had five goals in its previous seven games.

Guerin made it 2-1, scoring his 17th goal of the season from low in the right circle off a pass from Pierre Turgeon.

Jason Arnott and Rob DiMaio also scored to help Dallas snap Vancouver’s five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2).

DiMaio made it 3-1 with 6:52 left when his shot from the left circle glanced off the skate of Vancouver defenseman Brent Sopel and past goalie Dan Cloutier.

Marty Turco made 22 saves for the Stars, and Cloutier stopped 25 shots.

Markus Naslund had a second-period goal for the Canucks, who had played five consecutive overtime games, including a 2-1 victory in Nashville on Tuesday night.

Dallas opened the scoring at 4:23 of the first period on Arnott’s eighth goal. The Stars hadn’t had a first-period goal in their previous 10 games.

The Canucks tied it at 7:38 of the second period when Naslund skated up the slot and converted Brendan Morrison’s centering pass. Naslund has 17 goals.

Notes: Vancouver has two goals or less in six of its last seven games. … D Richard Matvichuk and Teppo Numminen were back in the lineup for Dallas. Matvichuk missed the previous four games due to a swollen knee. Numminen was out for 12 games due to a broken foot. … Rookie G Jason Bacashihua was Turco’s backup. Bacashihua was active for his first NHL game, filling in for Dallas’ usual backup goalie, Ron Tugnutt, out with a sprained knee.
