The Patriots, tied with the best record in football, have only two players selected.
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) – Ty Law and Richard Seymour are proud to have been selected to represent the New England Patriots at the Pro Bowl. But they’re wondering why more of their teammates won’t be joining them.
Both Law, a cornerback, and Seymour, a defensive lineman, questioned how safety Rodney Harrison could have been left off the AFC squad, and why more players on a team that has already clinched the AFC East and is tied with Kansas City for the best record in the NFL weren’t picked for the NFL’s all-star game. The Chiefs and Patriots are both 12-2 with two games remaining.
The invitations to the Pro Bowl are the fourth in nine years for Law, and the second in three seasons for Seymour.
Law, 29, is second on the team with five interceptions for 112 yards, including one returned 65 yards for a touchdown. Seymour, 24, is tied for the team’s sack lead with 7.5. He has 74 total tackles, good for fourth-best on the Patriots.
Kansas City and Baltimore each had eight players selected for the Feb. 8 all-star game in Honolulu. Fans, coaches and players voted, with each group counted equally.
“It is an honor to be chosen to go, but it is kind of bittersweet because even though we have one of the best records in the league, we only had two guys get selected,” Law said. “It’s sort of a shame and it just goes to show you how we still have so little respect across the league. “
Law said he thought the Patriots should have sent five or six players to the Pro Bowl, particularly Harrison, whom he called “far and away is the best safety in the league right now.” He also thought linebacker Tedy Bruschi, cornerback Tyrone Poole and quarterback Tom Brady were deserving of roster spots.
“You always feel you should have more guys make the team, and I definitely feel that Rodney Harrison was very deserving,” Seymour added. “I think a few other guys also deserve it, but definitely Rodney. I see the work that he puts in and the way he plays on the field and how he’s really contributed to this football team.”
The Patriots were not alone among winning teams with few Pro Bowl invitations. The Philadelphia Eagles (11-3) are tied with St. Louis atop the NFC, but only Donovan McNabb and cornerback Troy Vincent were named to the roster.
