BERLIN, N.H. (AP) – Charges against a 20-year-old Berlin man accused in the stabbing death of another Berlin resident have been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Edmund Schunemann originally was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Derek Puiia, 26, also of Berlin.

A Coos County grand jury returned the upgraded indictment this week.

Authorities said Puiia’s stepsister, Nina Villnave, found his body in the bathroom of his parents’ home on Oct. 29. He had been staying at the house while his mother and stepfather were on vacation, police said.

Authorities have not commented on a motive.

Puiia was supposed to go to trial on three counts of reckless conduct stemming from an Aug. 15 incident in which he threw a hammer at Villnave, and told two men, “I’ll bash your head and kill you,” according to court documents.
