School Committee members will vote on the name

Jan. 12.

LISBON – The Lisbon School Naming Committee has narrowed a list of possible names for the new elementary school down to three, based on student and resident recommendations.

In order to get maximum input, suggestion boxes were placed throughout the community, including the Town Office, post offices and libraries.

The 175 suggestions were narrowed down to these three:

• Lisbon Central School. This name was strongly supported by the community, with some saying it “symbolized the bringing together of the two ends of town with the middle.”

• Lisbon Community School. This also received strong community support. Some said this name “overtly states that the community is a part of the school.”

• Mill Street Community School. Supporters said this name recognizes the “history of the middle in all three parts of town, identifies where the school is located and the name is neutral.

School Committee members plan to vote on the name at their next business meeting, Monday, Jan. 12.

However, there is still time for residents to make their preferences known. Residents are being encouraged to contact either the Superintendent’s Office at 353-6711, or individual School Committee members to indicate their choice of a name.
