LIVERMORE FALLS – A large break in an old waterline on Foundry Road early Monday morning had to wait two days for repairs due to the storm, said Superintendent Doug Burdo Thursday.

Fortunately, the only customer directly affected by the break was the Sewage Treatment Plant, which had a temporary water supply, so the district was able to delay the repairs until after the storm and its aftermath.

A couple customers may have been troubled by dirty water, officials explained, but at least they had water during the break and the subsequent repair period.

District employees, aided by Elwood Leighton Excavation, made the repairs Wednesday to the old 12-inch, cast iron line, one of the original ones from a century ago.

They had to cut out a 14-foot section of the line and replaced it with ductile pipe, Burdo said, since there was a 10-foot crack in the middle of the old pipe. Fortunately, it occurred between valves, making the repairs easier, he noted.

In order to make the repair, three huge rocks, which Burdo estimated at 2 yards each, had to be removed. In addition, the material dug out couldn’t be used as fill and had to be hauled off.

Burdo said Thursday afternoon he hadn’t even been able to make an estimate of the costs for the repairs.
