Heavy rains and melted snow caused a lot of problems in the Oxford Hills area on Thursday.

None of them were very big, according to town officials.

Some secondary roads were closed for part to most of the day and the majority of complaints were about flooded basements.

“The water is still coming up and will probably continue for 24 hours,” said Oxford County Emergency Management Agency Director Dan Schorr. “There’s no real problems at this end of Oxford County. Just about every town is reporting minor problems.

“There’s a lot of basements flooded,” he said. “My biggest worries up are north along the Androscoggin.”

Norway Town Manager David Holt said the town had its share of flooded basements and that culverts along country roads were overflowing.

But his major concern was the road crews, who have been putting in long hours battling snow and rain associated problems.

“They have been out pretty constantly over the past three days,” Holt said. “They deserve a rest.”

Oxford Town Manager Michael Huston said there was some minor flooding on Sam Rowe Hill Road and where the No. 6 Road and East Oxford Road connect.

“Neither road had to close, but both are going to require a lot of gravel and lot of work,” Huston said.

A West Paris spokesman said there were a lot of flooded basements and the Fire Department was busy pumping them out.

“Most everything is good now,” said West Paris Road Commissioner Bill Keach on Thursday afternoon. “There’s been maybe a half dozen washouts where the water ran down the edge of road and washed out some gravel.”

He said Tuelltown Road, Morris Hill Road and Pioneer Street had all been under water at some point in the day. He said as of Thursday afternoon Pioneer Street was still under water, due to the Little Androscoggin River being backed up at Snow Falls.

“I expect the water to be down by tomorrow morning,” Keach said about the flooded road. “It probably crested early this morning.”

An Otisfield spokesman said that the Yeaton Swamp Road closed in the vicinity of Yeaton Swamp Bridge that connects Oxford and Otisfield.

Greenwood Town Manager Carol Whitman said residents there had a right to feel somewhat isolated with Route 26 and Route 232 closed.

“You can’t get to Bethel. You can’t get to Rumford. You can’t get there from here,” said Whitman.

She said there were some flooded basements, and the gate on the Alder River Dam was opened about about halfway because water was 2 inches from the top of the berm on the mill side of the dam.
