The Rumford native has had three books published and is doing research for another.

BETHEL – Author and educator Andrew DeRoche will be at Books-N-Things from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, for a book signing session.

DeRoche grew up in Rumford and attended schools there, graduating from Rumford High School in 1985. He pursued his interest in history and received his doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1997.

He has had three books published, including “Black, White and Chrome” and “The United States and Zimbabwe, 1953-1958.”

The third is titled “Andrew Young” and chronicles the life and works of the famed civil rights activist who often is referred to as an ambassador in the civil rights field. The book is a formative analysis of this key figure in American history and diplomacy.

It combines Wilsonianism and the Cold War with the new scholarly issues of race, human rights, Africa, globalization and free trade into a comprehensive study of the life of Young.

DeRoche places Young clearly in the mainstream of major events of the past 40 years and shows Young to be a major player and American leader whose work has reshaped the civil rights movement through realism and self-interest.

He is currently doing research on the life and work of Kenneth Kaunder in relations between Africa and the United States.

DeRoche is the son of Mary and Wayne Corkum of Bethel and resides in Longmont, Colo., and teaches history at Front Range Community College in Longmont.
