WINTHROP (AP) – Nobody was injured Friday night when a man armed with a gun held police at bay for several hours while he was holed up in a room in a motel.

Winthrop police said they were called to the Cobbossee Motel on Route 202 at about 4:45 p.m. after shots were fired inside a room.

A man identified as John Chisnell, 58, would not come out of his room when Winthrop police arrived, leading to a standoff that lasted five hours.

Other guests were evacuated.

Chisnell walked out of the room at about 9:45 p.m. and surrendered without incident.
