LISBON – A 20-year-old Bowdoin man, Andrew Bernier, was being held on $5,000 cash bail at the Androscoggin County Jail Saturday night in connection with an alleged robbery that occurred outside an ATM in Lisbon Falls Friday night.
Lisbon Detective Bill Tapley said Bernier asked the victim, Nicholas Hultman, 22, of Bowdoinham, for a ride earlier in the evening. Bernier and Hultman are acquainted.
Hultman drove to the ATM outside Androscoggin Bank at the Midtown Shopping Center where he withdrew $300 from his account. Bernier then brandished a knife with a four-inch blade and demanded the money, Tapley said.
Hultman handed the money over. He told police he feared for the safety of his 2-year-old son who was with them. Bernier told the victim to drive and they ended up at the Farwell Mill parking lot in Lisbon Village where Bernier left the vehicle, police said. The incident was reported to police at about 8:30 p.m.
Bernier was apprehended by Topsham police around 1 a.m. Saturday. He was arrested by Tapley and charged with robbery. All but $25 was recovered at the time of his arrest. He was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail where he was held Saturday night.
