DIXFIELD – Officials attempting to cement a merger of Peru schools and SAD 21 will meet with area selectmen, school directors and a state official Monday, Dec. 22.

Participants at the 6 p.m. meeting in the cafeteria at Dirigo High School include Peru, Canton, Carthage and Dixfield selectmen, SAD 21 and Peru school boards and Education Commissioner Susan A. Gendron.

Instead of being a public forum, though, the meeting will only allow discussion between officials and Gendron. SAD 21 Superintendent Thomas Ward and Peru School Superintendent John Turner have encouraged public attendance.

On Dec. 1, a majority of SAD 21 directors from Dixfield and Carthage nixed sending a merger contract to Gendron for approval.

At issue was a cost-share ratio that Gendron recommended be based 90 percent on valuation and 10 percent pupil population. The Dec. 1 majority, instead, won’t budge for anything less than 100 percent valuation.

The meeting was first set for Dec. 15, but it was rescheduled due to a snowstorm.
