Money would help cover school lunch program

JAY – A resident presented selectmen with a petition Monday asking them to hold a special town meeting to save the school lunch program. School committee members voted Dec. 4 to close the school bakery and eliminate jobs Dec. 31.

The petition stated that “Because we the undersigned do not believe the vote by the Jay school board to eliminate (personnel) in the cafeteria, outsource bread purchases, reduce work hours and jeopardize the quality of the lunch program for our schools was a true representation of the feeling of the people of Jay, we hereby request that the selectmen hold a special town meeting to vote on the following warrant article:

“To see if the town will vote to authorize the selectmen to transfer monies from the undesignated fund to the food service program account as they deem advisable to cover the cost of the school lunch program for the year ending June 2004.”

The recommended amount to transfer is $50,000.

Laurie Hutchins, who worked for the food service program for 10 years until her position was eliminated by the committee’s vote, presented 170 signatures to selectmen.

She has until Dec. 30 to get the remaining signatures she needs for selectmen to consider the petition at their next meeting.

Selectmen’s Chairman Bill Harlow said he believed she needed more than 200 signatures for the article to be placed on the warrant.
