In regards to the recent shooting of Mr. Vince Berube by the Lewiston Police Department, I feel the shooting wasn’t necessary.

Officer W. Ken Katsaris is a police consultant for police officers in all 50 states, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the FBI, border patrol, DEA, CIA, U.S. Marshals Service, ATF and Federal Bureau of Corrections. This officer came to Maine from Florida. He had over 500 police officers from all over the United States and trained them in the use of mace. In 1990, if police officers did not use Mace, then their only option would be to use a gun.

This poor man who just got shot, because of a hammer and hitting on police cars with it, wasn’t right for doing this, but there certainly were other ways to put him down without shooting him. The poor man just kept yelling to leave his wife alone. I’m sorry to hear that the Lewiston Police Department didn’t learn their lesson after shooting my brother, Michael Roy. I’m sure the police will be cleared of all wrongdoing, they always are, aren’t they?

Bob Roy, Lisbon

Editor’s note: Police say Berube was threatening an officer with the hammer.
