1919 – 2003

FARMINGTON – Harold Arvo Kilponen Sr., 84, of Prescott St., Farmington, died early Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 23, at Sandy River Center for Health Care and Rehabilitation.

He was born April 15, 1919, in Paris, a son of Kalle and Elsa (Pulkinen) Kilponen. He received his education in Canton and Monmouth schools and on May 21, 1942, entered the U. S. Army. He served in the

1476th Ordinance Medium Automotive Maintenance Platoon in the 9th Air Force during World War II, beginning in Iceland, traveling to England and then to France. He also served in the Battle of the Bulge.

Upon returning from the war, he married his sweetheart Madeline Pond in Portland. For over 30 years he was a heavy equipement operator and a sawyer for Maine Dowel.

He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and was always willing to help a neighbor or friend in need.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Madeline of Farmington; one son, Harold A. “Kip” Kilponen Jr. and his wife, Jean-Ann of Exeter, N.H.; a sister, Taimi Hemingway of Millinocket; a granddaughter, Gabrielle Kilponen of Exeter, N.H.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Knut, Ansel and Elmer.
