1930 – 2003

LEWISTON – Rita J. Mercier, 73, of 57 Rachel Blvd., went peacefully to the Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas morning, Dec. 25, after being surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Lewiston May 7, 1930, a daughter of Telesphore and Eugenie Morin Charest.

She was educated in Lewiston schools, worked at Weymouth Shoe till she married. She also worked part time at Peck’s and in later years for Sarah Coventry.

She loved her entire family with all heart, and always centered her activities around them, especially attending her grandchildren’s activities. She loved planting flowers and playing weekly card games with her sisters.

A devoted Catholic, Mrs. Mercier was a member of Holy Family Parish, where she served as a pastoral care minister with her husband, participated in the Holy Family Prayer Group. She was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne’s Sodality, CYO and Ministry of Our Lady of Fatima.

She is survived by her husband Alfred Mercier Jr. of Lewiston whom she married June 18, 1960; a daughter, Susan King and her husband Kevin of Kennebunk; two grandchildren, Kristin and Katherine King; three sisters, Fernande Hinse of Lewiston, Carmen Smith of Auburn, Lorraine Dussault and her husband Donald of Lewiston; a brother, Roger Charest and wife Patricia of Lewiston; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Charest of Auburn; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; three brothers, Bill, Normand and Rene Charest; and a sister, Connie Foss.
