LEWISTON – Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice will hold a volunteer training program Feb. 10 for anyone who would like to become a volunteer with the organization. Call Nancy Greene, volunteer coordinator, at 777-7740 or 1-800-482-7412 for more information and to sign up.

Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice has many volunteer opportunities that allow people to provide practical help and emotional support to others. Hospice volunteers provide emotional support to someone who is terminally ill and their family.

Other volunteers are matched with patients in or near their local communities. They visit patients regularly, sometimes staying a few hours so that the person’s caregiver can take a break. In addition they may also do errands, if requested, or meet other appropriate needs. They do not provide hands-on care.

Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice provides a 25-hour training program to volunteers at no charge, just a personal commitment of two to four hours of their time a week to help others.

Training covers the needs of terminally ill patients and their families, the hospice philosophy, communications and listening skills, the impact of illness on the family, spiritual aspects of dying, grief and bereavement, funeral arrangements and related topics.
