DRAPER, Utah (AP) – Investigators said powerful winds may have caused a motor home to crash off a highway bridge, killing six family members and injuring four.
The victims included the mother and father and four of their children. One of the victims was an infant, and the others were 7, 6 and 4. Four others were injured, including a 12-year-old who is in critical condition.
It is not known why the vehicle left the road, but investigators said high winds from a snowstorm may have been a factor. Investigators had initially ruled out weather conditions as a cause, but the wind re-emerged as a focal point Monday.
The motor home was traveling on Interstate 15, about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, when the vehicle drove into the median, through a guard rail and then went airborne for about 100 feet before crashing nose first on a highway below.
Salt Lake City saw about 18 inches of snow fall between Christmas Day and early Sunday, but the interstate was clear and dry at the time of the accident.
