1925 – 2003

SOUTH PORTLAND – Dorothy C. Harmon, 78, of 52 Arrowwood Court, South Portland, died Dec. 29, at home, after a long illness.

Born in Gardiner, Dec. 15, 1925, the daughter of the late Lloyd C. and Harriet M. (Cunningham) Calderwood, she was graduated from Gardiner High School in 1943, and from the former Kennebec School of Commerce, with additional studies at the University of Maine Continuing Education branches in Auburn and Portland.

Mrs. Harmon was an administrative or executive secretary for various organizations or agencies, including South Portland Health Services, Inc., Medical Care Development, Inc. of Augusta and Southern Maine Agency on Aging. She was also employed from January, 1973 to January, 1979 by the former U.S. Senator William D. Hathaway in his Portland Field Office as secretary/caseworker. In previous years, she was employed by the Portland Public Schools, the Episcopal Diocese of Maine, the Women’s Job Corps Center in Poland Spring and Bates College in Lewiston. She retired in 1988.

Mrs. Harmon was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of St. Luke in Portland, formerly of St. Michael’s, Auburn and Christ Church, Gardiner. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Samuel Grant Chapter, Gardiner and the National Cathedral Association.

She is survived by a son, William L. Harmon of South Portland; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Bruce A. Harmon in 1992; and her former husband, Frederick P. Harmon in 1993.
