1912 – 2003

AUBURN – Edward Joseph Bouley, 91, formerly of 37 Manley St., passed away Dec. 30, at Clover Health Care Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Lewiston on Dec. 18, 1912, the oldest of nine children born to Melanie Morin and Albert Bouley. His family moved back to Colerain, Province of Quebec, Canada, when he was 18 months old. “Ed” completed the sixth grade of school while working on the family farm. He later worked with his father in the asbestos mine.

1934 found him working as a lumberjack in New Hampshire, and New York, before moving to Auburn in 1937, to live with his uncle Bob and two aunts. He worked at the Cushman Building in Auburn for 22 1/2 years as a shoe cutter that cut samples. Clark Shoe, Crest Shoe, Shapiro and finally Auerback Shoe were part of his employment history.

He retired at the age of 62, but was called back to the shoe industry as a fancy stitcher, working on hand bags and repairing the cutting machines. He then retired at the age of 75.

He enjoyed volunteering at the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Good Shepherd Food Bank and any other organization that might need his time and energy, when the fish weren’t biting.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church of Auburn, and a 13-year member of the Young at Heart Fellowship at Court Street Baptist Church in Auburn.

He is survived by his wife, Helen M. Bouley, whom he married on Oct. 22, 1960; three sisters, Edith Bouffard, Florianne Bouffard, and Carmen Rousseau in Canada; one stepnephew, Winston S. Greaton of Auburn; and two stepnieces, Beverly West of Wilton and Katherine Whittemore of Canton.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.
