BUCKFIELD – Christmas Eve was special for the 36 workers at Wells Wood Turning & Finishing Inc.

Not only because Christmas was hours away, but also because that day marked the 11th year without a lost time accident at the mill.

“It’s an awesome record,” said company President Tom Wallace. “We’re very proud of the employee’s accomplishments in safety and we’re looking forward to celebrating the 12th year next year.”

Wallace and Alan Chesney purchased the mill, formerly known as C.F. Wells Inc., from Wil Lamarre in November. Wallace said he plans to keep existing safety programs in tact.

The mill uses lathes and table saws in its everyday production.

“There’s a lot of moving parts,” Wallace said.

He said a key to the safe operation is that employees look out for each other, and if they see something is wrong they speak up and correct the situation.

He also has bonuses for safety. He said an employee’s name is drawn once a week for a $40 bonus on every week that passes without an incident.

“At the end of the year without an incident we put everybody’s name in a hat and draw a winner for a Caribbean cruise,” Wallace said. “We also draw 10 winners of $100 each.”

Wells Wood manufactures woodturnings used in furniture, hand tools and the craft industry.
