Two other men escaped without serious injury.

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) – One man died in a Brockton house fire Thursday after he, his brother and father tried to push a burning mattress from the home and it got jammed in the doorway, according to Brockton fire officials and broadcast reports.

Careless smoking apparently started a mattress fire in the house after midnight, said Deputy Fire Chief Edward Mack.

The fire spread when the man and his two relatives tried to push the mattress through a door and it got stuck, Mack said.

“(The fire) spread to one room and the hallway,” Mack said. “It apparently blocked egress of the occupant.”

Two of the men managed to get out.

Fire fighters found the third on the second floor of the house with burns and smoke inhalation.

He was taken to Brockton Hospital, where he died of his injuries, Mack said.

Broadcast reports said that the men were a father and two sons, and that the man who was killed was one of the sons.

Fire officials could not immediately confirm their relationship, but said they were related.

Another man who inhaled smoke was also taken to the hospital, but Mack did not know his condition.

Mack did not release any of the men’s identities.

The state fire marshal’s office was investigating.
