NORWAY – The Discovery Area in the Children’s Room at the Norway Memorial Library will offer “A Journey to Mars” during January and February. Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to come into the library to make a model spaceship.

The Discovery Area is always available during library hours and has ongoing hands-on activities for elementary school age children on specific topics which change bimonthly. The topic for the next two months is astronomy and there will be displays of planets and information about space. Materials for making model spaceships will be available for children who would like to stop in and make one.

There will be two special Saturday events during this “Journey to Mars.” On Jan. 10 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, there will be a child and parent activity to build a spaceship. Michael Murphy, a library volunteer and parent, will guide participants in building a model spaceship with an estes rocket. Children ages 6 to 12 are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration is required by Jan. 8 and there will be a charge of $5 to purchase a rocket. Call Amy at the library at 743-5308 to register.

On Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, there will be a rocket launch of all the model spaceships made during January. First there will be an indoor launch of all spaceships in the Discovery Area. This will be followed by an outdoor launch of the spaceships made with the estes rockets. Children who attend the outdoor launch must be accompanied by an adult.
