FARMINGTON – The constant repetition is helping the Mt. Blue girls’ basketball team, but there are still some aspects that require some adjustments.

Those shortcomings were exposed by Skowhegan in a KVAC game Friday night.

Guards Nicole Paradis and Bethany Sevey each scored 13 points to lead a strong running game and a solid defense to a 57-40 Indians victory.

Mt. Blue freshman Christina Mosher continued her string of fine early-season performances with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 Mosher is showing skills resembling former player Heather Ernest, who is playing at the University of Maine.

“We are still a young team,” Mt. Blue coach Jeannie Beaulieu said. “But, we are coming together. There’s still some fundamentals that we need to work on.”

The Cougars (2-4) deployed a zone defense in an attempt to slow Skowhegan’s three-guard offense.

But the Indians kept the ball in motion long enough to find an open shot

Skowhegan (4-1) had pulled ahead early behind Paradis and Jessica Abbott, who disrupted the Cougars offense. Mt. Blue responded by adjusting its defense. The shift in momentum was evident.

Mt. Blue scored nine of the first 11 points in the second quarter and trailed the Indians 20-17. Amanda Laney opened with a 3-pointer and Mosher scored off an offensive rebound. Following a turnover, Ashley Weeks made a basket and Mosher sank two free throws.

“Skowhegan and Cony are both tenacious teams,” Beaulieu said. “We needed to be patient on offense. There was some scoring from inside, but we had trouble getting our entry passes in to (Mosher).”

Skowhegan regrouped and scored three unanswered baskets to take a 26-18 lead at halftime. The Indians proceeded to break the game with a 10-0 run in the third quarter.

Shelby Stevens opened with a basket, but the Cougars were held scoreless until Mosher scored with 1:51 left in the frame.

The Cougars, who committed 23 turnovers, shot 25 percent in the third quarter.

“Our intensity helped us,” Skowhegan coach Paul True said. “I thought that we came out flat. Our plan on offense was to get the ball up and down the court. Mt. Blue prevented us from doing that in the second quarter.”

Mt. Blue tried numerous combinations of players, including Heather Groder, Bethany Jordan, Sandra Moloney, but the Indians maintained the pressure.
