A public Christmas display was in shambles Friday morning.

LEWISTON – You’ve never seen a sadder sight. Santa was slumped over to his side as if unconscious in the seat of his sleigh. The lead reindeer was flat out on the ground.

If it were Christmas, this crew would never get off the ground.

Police are trying to determine why a Christmas display at the top of Bartlett Street hill looked like the aftermath of a rumble Friday morning.

Santa appeared to have been roughed up and the reindeer knocked over.

The sleigh did not appear to be damaged.

The display has been set up near the intersection of Bartlett Street and East Avenue since November.

In shambles early in the day, the Santa display was fixed by public works officials later in the afternoon. Both jolly old elf and his reindeer remained upright Friday night.
