DANBURY, Conn. – Brian Gerrity and Jon Furbush scored 16 points apiece, including four 3-pointers each, to lead Bates College to a 73-49 win over Newbury College in men’s basketball action Sunday afternoon.

The Bobcats (7-2) took a comanding 37-22 lead into the intermission and never looked back as they used a balanced scoring attack with four players hitting double digits. Ramon Garcia and Elliott Linsley each added 10 points in the lopsided win.

Newbury was paced by Julius Hobert with a 20 points while Billy Penn added 15 points.

Women’s basketball
St. Joe’s 57, Oliver Naz. 56

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Morgan Brownlee poured in 19 points and Abbie Rice added 14 points as St. Joseph’s College handed Oliver Nazarene University a 57-56 setback in the consolation round of the Hampton Inn classic.

The Monks and Oliver Nazarene played to a 52-52 tie at the end of regulation to force an extra period.

Bates 86, College of N.J. 63

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Olivia Zurek scored 20 points and hauled down 14 rebounds to spartk Bates to a 86-63 triumph over The College of New Jersey in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Women’s Basketball Classic.

DeSales (Pa.) took the championship with a 74-44 triumph over Springfield.

The Bobcats (5-4) set a tournament record by shooting 55.6 percent in Sunday’s victory.

Lauren Dubois matched Zurek with 20 points and tied a tournament record with six 3-pointers. Heather Taylor chipped in with 12 points and nine assists.

Zurek was named to the all-tournament team.

Three players scored 11 points to lead TCNJ (4-3).
