RALEIGH, N.C. – Brian Boucher made 26 saves for his third straight shutout, leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
Boucher has stopped 82 shots in the past three games and is unbeaten in seven starts (4-0-3).
Jan Hrdina had a goal and two assists for Phoenix, and Branko Radivojevic added three assists. Hrdina has 11 points in 11 games since returning from a toe injury.
Ladislav Nagy and defenseman Paul Mara also scored for the Coyotes.
Carolina goalie Jamie Storr, making his first start in 18 games, allowed three goals on 23 shots and remains winless this season (0-5-2).
The Hurricanes, the lowest-scoring team in the NHL, fell to 4-5 under coach Peter Laviolette, who replaced Paul Maurice on Dec. 15. They have scored just 12 goals in those nine games.
Boucher preserved the shutout with a glove save on a point-blank shot from Ron Francis at 10:25 in the third period.
Oilers 4, Blackhawks 3
CHICAGO – Ethan Moreau snapped a tie 55 seconds into the third period and the Edmonton Oilers rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Sunday night.
Moreau beat Steve Passmore on the short side with a high shot from a sharp angle, giving the Oilers a 4-3 lead. Tommy Salo made 22 saves for the Oilers, who have won two straight and are undefeated in three games.
Brad Isbister, Jarret Stoll and Ryan Smyth also scored for the Oilers, all in a 2:04 span in the second period. Stoll and Smyth had short-handed goals 41 seconds apart during the same Edmonton minor penalty.
Alex Zhamnov, Deron Quint and Nathan Dempsey scored for the Blackhawks, who are 4-15-4-4 in their last 27 games.
Zhamnov opened the scoring during a four-on-four 3:20 into the first period. He cut off the right boards, fired from the circle and beat Salo.
Quint made it 2-0 at 10:38 when he picked off a clearing attempt by Edmonton and fired a low shot past Salo.
The Oilers came back with three goals in a 2:04 span late in the second period to take a 3-2 lead.
Isbister tipped a feed from Smyth between Passmore’s legs at 11:57 to cut it to 2-1.
Avalanche 3, Wild 1
DENVER – Teemu Selanne and Milan Hejduk scored power-play goals in the second period, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 Sunday night for their third straight victory.
Peter Forsberg added an empty-net goal for the Avalanche in the final minute, helping rookie Phil Sauve earn his fourth career win. Sauve made 25 saves, and Minnesota’s Manny Fernandez had 26.
Jason Wiemer scored for the Wild.
Colorado was without captain Joe Sakic, who was diagnosed with a broken jaw and had minor surgery Saturday. Sakic was injured Wednesday, but played Friday with a full visor and football-type face mask. He anticipated playing Tuesday night against Columbus.
Canadiens 4, Capitals 1
MONTREAL – Michael Ryder scored twice and assisted on Sheldon Souray’s 13th goal of the season, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Washington Capitals 4-1 Sunday for their first winning streak in more than two months.
Ryder opened the scoring in the first period with a shot inside the left post as he moved to the slot, then beat goalie Maxime Ouellet with an almost identical shot for his ninth of the season – an unassisted goal midway through the third.
Joe Juneau also scored and Jose Theodore made 19 saves for Montreal, which hadn’t won consecutive games in 12 previous tries since Oct. 20-23.
The Canadiens, who beat Atlanta 5-1 on Saturday, extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1). They have earned a point in nine of their last 11 (6-2-2-1), moving four games over .500 for the first time this season at 19-15-5-2.
Joel Kwiatkowski scored for Washington, which failed in its sixth attempt for the 1,000th regular-season win in team history. The Capitals, who lost 5-2 in Ottawa the night before, fell to 0-5-1 since a 3-2 win over Montreal on Dec. 23 brought them within one win of the milestone.
