LEWISTON – Lionel Guay will be sworn in tonight as Lewiston’s next mayor.

The city will host a ceremony for Guay beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Lewiston Middle School. The incoming mayor will present an inaugural address, highlighting his goals and objectives for the city.

Guay, brother of Auburn Mayor Normand Guay, easily won the mayor’s seat in November, garnering 76 percent of the vote.

He will take over for outgoing mayor Larry Raymond, whose two-year term was marked by controversy and ethnic tensions within the city. During the ceremony, Raymond will deliver his farewell address.

All City Council and School Committee officials will take their oaths of office during the ceremony. New city councilors include Ward 1’s Stavros Mendros and Ward 5’s Robert Connors. New School Committee members include at-large representative Leah Poulin and Ward 1 representative Kay Theberge.

During the evening, the City Council will elect a president for the next term and the School Committee will elect a chairperson.

Roger Bosse, a friend of the mayor-elect, will sing the national anthem to open the ceremony. The Rev. Robert D. Lariviere of Saints Peter and Paul parish will deliver the invocation and benediction. The Lewiston Fire and Police departments’ honor guards will conduct the presentation and retirement of the flags.

A reception will immediately follow the ceremony at the Franco-American Heritage Center, at 46 Cedar St. The inauguration and the reception are free and open to the public.
