ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Bills president Tom Donahoe has at least one more candidate to interview for Buffalo’s vacant head-coaching job after he spent most of Tuesday meeting with ex-New York Giants coach Jim Fassel.
After meeting with Fassel, Donahoe said he had one more interview scheduled for Wednesday, Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said. Berchtold would not say who that person is, or provide any details of Donahoe’s meeting with Fassel.
Fassel is the sixth candidate the Bills have interviewed in the last week since not rehiring Gregg Williams, who completed the third and final year of his contract.
Fassel is considered one of the leading contenders for the Bills job because of his seven years head-coaching experience with the Giants and his offensive expertise. Buffalo is coming off a discouraging 6-10 season in which its Drew Bledsoe-led offense finished among the worst in the NFL.
Fassel flew home to New Jersey after the meeting and described it “as a good day” in a brief interview with Buffalo’s WGRZ-TV.
He declined to say whether the Bills had made him an offer, adding he hoped to have a better idea of where he stood by this weekend.
Buffalo was the last stop on Fassel’s immediate itinerary after he spent last weekend interviewing for jobs with Cardinals officials and Redskins owner Dan Snyder.
Fassel finished with a 60-56-1 with the Giants, and led New York to the playoffs three times, including in 2000 when the team won the NFC title. The Giants unraveled this season partly because of injuries and finished with a 4-12 record. At Fassel’s request, the team announced his firing Dec. 16, with an agreement that he coach the last two games.
Buffalo is now one of six teams seeking new coaches after the Giants hired former Jacksonville coach Tom Coughlin to replace Fassel on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Bills interviewed former Chicago Bears coach Dick Jauron and their own defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, whose unit finished among the NFL’s best this past season.
Last week, Donahoe met with Patriots coaches, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, and Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith. Under NFL rules, the Bills are barred from resuming talks with those three coaches until their teams complete their respective playoff runs.
