I am a 56-year-old male who has been walking to work and back every day now for about 13 years. Regardless of the weather, I have chosen to walk for my health and for the peace of mind it gives me.

As I walk to work, about 1 1/2 miles one way, I am able to observe many things that most travelers do not.

I am able to notice and enjoy the wonderful things God has created for us, such as squirrels readying for winter, a hawk carrying a fish he just snatched out of the river behind Florian’s Market or the colorful leaves of autumn.

The downside to being a pedestrian in this city of Auburn would be the less-than-courteous drivers who only see you as an obstruction in their path.

After our first big snow this year and due to the inability of the sidewalk crews to remove the snow on High and Washington streets, I came close to seeing God.

Perhaps if the person driving that vehicle had bothered to scrape the frost before leaving home, I would not have had to jump onto the snow bank to save myself.

At that same intersection, I observed two trucks barreling through the light. Both were going too fast.

As a former trucker, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I killed an innocent person or family because I was in a hurry.
