CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A former lawyer, who fled after he repaid only $70 of more than $120,000 he stole from clients, has been captured in Italy.
Raymond Clements is to be extradited to the United States, where he could face the remaining 31/2 to 7 years of his deferred sentence as well as the remaining three years of his original six-year sentence, the attorney general’s office said.
Clements, 65, who had lived in the Groveton section of Northumberland, pleaded guilty to theft in 1994 and served three years before he was released on parole. He was to repay the money he stole in biweekly payments.
His parole was revoked in January 1999 after he paid only $70 and fled. The case was assigned to the New Hampshire Joint Fugitive Task Force in December 2002 and a federal warrant issued for his arrest.
He was located in Mendicino, Italy, and arrested Sunday by Italian authorities, U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier said.
