FARMINGTON – Questions about diabetes will be answered during Franklin Memorial Hospital’s Jan. 16 “Prescriptions for Health” presentation featuring Barb MacGregor.

MacGregor is a certified diabetes educator and nurse in the hospital’s outpatient clinic. She will speak on “Diabetes: the Silent Killer.”

The event will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. in the FMH Walden Room and will include a light breakfast.

According to MacGregor, “Nearly 6 percent of the American population has diabetes, and about one third of those individuals are not even aware that they have it. The average person diagnosed with diabetes has already had the disease for about eight years.

“While it’s easy to screen for diabetes through a simple blood glucose test, diabetes may not be easily recognized at first since so many of its symptoms are common complaints,” said MacGregor. “Unfortunately, many people initially become aware that they have diabetes when they develop one of its life-threatening complications.”

The presentation will feature information on diabetes including risk factors, symptoms, diets, diagnostic tests, treatments, complications, suggested lifestyle changes, and more.

The presentation is part of the hospital’s community health information series. “Prescriptions for Health” is free and open to the public. Registration for the presentation is required since space is limited. For more information or to register, phone Jill Gray at 779-2555.
