BANGOR (AP) – A Tuesday morning fire that forced the evacuation of the Shaw’s supermarket on Main Street may have been ignited by welders working in the rear of the building, investigators said.

No one was injured but there were tense moments after the flames were spotted. Bangor and Brewer firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the fire.

The fire, while not big, was hot and smoky, said Vance Tripp, Bangor’s assistant fire chief. He said the cause remained under investigation.
