BETHEL – A record number of foreclosure notices went out Tuesday. Forty-nine property owners failed to pay overdue back taxes, said Town Clerk Christen Mason.

At Monday night’s selectmen’s meeting, Mason said there are another 63 foreclosures pending.

“This is double what it normally is,” Mason said, responding to a selectman’s question. “But this is the first year that timeshares came into the issue. There are 27 of them.”

Property owners have until March 22 to pay the tax liens before selectmen can legally foreclose on the properties. That doesn’t happen often, said Town Manager Scott Cole.

Despite the large number of timeshares, Mason didn’t think that the town would end up foreclosing on those properties. Instead, she believes the timeshare entities will pay the back taxes then bill the unit week owners.
