BETHEL – By a 5-0 vote, selectmen Monday night approved a revised agreement to continue sharing their code enforcement officer with Newry for an increased fee.
In the past, both towns shared the officer but Newry paid 10 percent of the cost. Bethel picked up the other 90 percent. Now that Newry officials realize they need more of the services that Bethel code enforcement officer Richard St. John provides, they’re willing to pay an additional 10 percent, reducing Bethel’s portion to 80 percent.
Other approved changes in the code enforcement and plumbing inspection services agreement:
• Increase the number of code enforcement officer hours in Newry from four to eight per week.
• Allow the code enforcement officer to conduct Newry and Bethel business from either office location.
• Eliminate mandatory attendance by the code enforcement officer at Newry Planning Board meetings. Bethel is pursuing the same policy regarding meetings.
