With the casino and racino debates over, several questions arise for our governor.
The moral and social issues aside, no one can disagree that the casino and racinos would have created many jobs and revenue for the state from payroll, sales, income taxes.
Tremendous attention was paid to the issue that only a small portion of the gross profits would stay in Maine. However, no other large corporation donates millions of their profits off the top and just give it to the state.
Our governor had the audacity to say that it was not in the economic interest of our state.
Since October, we have lost hundreds of jobs and the total is over 1,700 jobs since last June. I understand why the casino and racinos do not meet our economic interest. They create jobs instead of laying off workers.
Now he is proposing changes to the racino referendum language after the voters have approved it and has the gall to say he is still “respecting” the voters will. What idiocy for a governor to say that we do not want gambling in the state while increasing the number of scratch tickets.
As a lifelong Democrat (not for very much longer), I can honestly say I will never vote for this governor again. I can only hope he starts paying as much attention to our economic plan in the near future as he has in defeating the casino and racino issues over the past several months.
