1905 – 2004

LEWISTON – Dr. Michael J. Harkins, 98, of 437 Main St. died Thursday morning, Jan. 8, at his home.

He was born in Lewiston, July 1, 1905, a son of Michael T. and Ellen (Byrnes) Harkins. He was educated in local schools, graduated from Bates College in 1927, and earned his medical degree from McGill University in 1932.

Dr. Harkins was married to the former Helen McGillicuddy who died Oct. 16, 1999. He was a Veteran of the Military, having served in the Army Air Corps, during World War II. He did his internship at Central Maine General Hospital from 1931 to 1933; and then he served on staff until May, 1966.

He then went into private consultation until 1984. Dr. Harkins worked locally as a Physician for over 50 years until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Knights of Columbus 106, the VFW, and American Legion Posts in Litchfield. He was a founding member of the American Trust Bank, and he was also the founder of the Montello Manor.

In his free time, he enjoyed living by the ocean, farming, forestry, reading, and carpentry.

He leaves three daughters, Helen Mary Jennings, (husband Randall of Litchfield) Margaret Ellen Harkins of Boston, and Nance Kathleen Harkins of Litchfield; two sons, Michael J. Harkins Jr. of Litchfield, and John McGillicuddy Harkins of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Kathleen Harkins of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Michael J. Harkins III, and Gabriel J. Jennings (both of Litchfield).
