1937 – 2004

EAST WILTON – Carl L. Caton, 66, a resident of East Wilton, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 9, at his home after a long, courageous fight with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family and close friends as he took the journey to be with the Lord.

He was born in Durham on Feb. 4, 1937, delivered by his great aunt Abbie Douglas. He was the son of Maurice L. and Hazel Grover Caton. He attended school his first year in a one-room schoolhouse and transferred his second year to a two-room school. He graduated from Crossman Corner grade school, later attending Lisbon High School, where he played football and graduated in 1955.

Following graduation, he worked in the woods, later joining the Army on March 13, 1956, spending three years in Heidleberg, Germany. It was in Germany that he met and married Gisela Geiser. He was discharged from the Army on March 9, 1959. He and his wife later divorced.

He worked for a short time at the Worumbo Woolen Mill in Lisbon Falls setting up machines, and also for Bath Iron Works. In 1960, he went to work for NCR Corporation until his retirement in 2000 after nearly 40 years of service.

In 1965, he married Connie Chandler of Livermore Falls. She passed away in 1984.

On June 28, 1986, he married Helen Y. Croteau of Wilton, who survives him.

He attended the First Baptist Church of Livermore Falls and was a member of the Woodland Wanderers Snowmobile Club, Triple Town Swingers, and the Wilton Historical Society. He was an active member of the local Cancer Support Group, one of the founders of the Lane-Dube Amvets, Post #33 of Jay, a member of the Lindey Flagg Archery Club of Livermore Falls, Androscoggin Valley Beagle Club of Auburn, Friends of the Library of Wilton, and the Spruce Mountain Ski Club where he was on the board of directors and ski patrol.

He is survived by his wife of Wilton; his children and their spouses, Irene and Tony Couture of Jay, Arlene and Herschel Welch Jr. of Jay, Nancy and Ted Chaney of Jay, Douglas and Tiffany Caton of Litchfield, Richard and Sylvia Sanders of Leeds, James Sanders of Burlington, Vt., Dayna and Jamie Emerson of Bangor, and David Croteau of East Corinth; a brother, Donald Caton and his wife Lavada of Wildwood, Fla.; two sisters, Glenice Hutchin of Falmouth and Arlene Rand and her husband Walter Jr. of Gorham; 17 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
