I am writing in response to a letter titled, “No holiday” concerning the lack of celebrating Christmas because their son was sent to Iraq (Dec. 23). Perhaps a little politics there.

The couple missed the point totally. Christians celebrate Christmas because it represents the birth of Jesus Christ.

Pride, dignity, decorum and respect defines our military. Be proud of your son and, most importantly, be supportive.

Our son is a pilot and served in the Gulf War and in Bosnia during Christmas. He left a wife and three young boys behind. Only God knows the days and nights we cried as we prayed for his safety. My husband was riddled with worry and fear, but never once did we not support him, nor blame the president for his decision. We encouraged him and praised his efforts.

I urge the Van Nests to stand up for their son and be proud that he is serving our county. Offer praise and support him, pray for his safety and the safety of his fellow soldiers.

America is freedom, fought for by many with honor, courage, integrity and, most of all, the ultimate sacrifice. How else can we display our appreciation for our military other than total support and constant prayer for their safety and well being?
