LIVERMORE FALLS – In a special session Monday night, selectmen set Feb. 11 as the date for the special town election to fill the vacancy on the board.
The successful candidate will fill the term left vacant when Clayton Putnam resigned last month. The term will run until June 2006.
Feb. 11 is the earliest the election can be held under state law, according to Town Clerk Kristal Flagg.
Flagg said she will have nomination papers ready by Friday, Jan. 16. They must be returned to her by Jan. 28 with at least 25 signatures from registered town voters.
Any resident who is a registered voter may run for the office by submitting the necessary paper work.
Polls will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on Feb. 11. People unable to vote during that time may use absentee ballots that will be available the week of Feb. 2 and may be requested by mail, Flagg said.
In other business, the board discussed a burned building on Main Street and two unsightly vacant buildings near it.
The burned structure reportedly was to be demolished last month but is still standing. One of the others is being used for storage, it was said.
Little can be done as long as the buildings are boarded up and secure, selectmen said.
Town Manager Alan Gove reported that the school department does not want the old generator so it will be disposed of.
He also said the cruiser sustained about $1,000 damage when it struck a deer Saturday night.
