Jeffrey Coffin was found with his ex, with whom he’s barred from having contact.
AUBURN – A Lewiston man initially charged with trying to kill his ex-girlfriend was released on $10,000 bail Friday after he pleaded guilty to a less serious charge of aggravated assault.
Less than 48 hours later, Jeffrey Coffin was back behind bars, charged with violating a condition of his release that barred him from having any contact with his victim.
According to Assistant District Attorney Nick Worden, Coffin was arrested early Sunday morning after police found him and his ex-girlfriend in a Rockland motel room.
As a result, Worden plans to ask that Coffin’s bail be revoked and that he remain in prison until his sentencing on the assault charge.
Coffin, 44, was originally arrested July 9 after police received a call that a couple was fighting inside an apartment on Pine Street.
The officers forced their way into the apartment to find Coffin’s ex-girlfriend in blood with cuts on her hands and head.
According to police, the girlfriend told the officers that Coffin had threatened to kill her and that he prevented her from calling police.
The woman was rushed to a local hospital where she was treated and released. Coffin was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
The District Attorney’s Office agreed to drop the attempted murder charge in exchange for a guilty plea on the less serious offense.
Justice Ellen Gorman accepted Coffin’s plea Friday morning and set his bail at $10,000 in property. As a condition of his bail, Gorman told Coffin that he could not have any contact with his ex-girlfriend.
Coffin posted bail later that afternoon and was released.
The couple was found together about a day and a half later, Worden said.
Coffin made his initial appearance on the violation charge Monday in 6th District Court in Rockland. His bail was set at $2,500 cash or $7,500 in property, and he remained in Knox County Jail Monday afternoon.
The sentencing hearing for the assault conviction was not scheduled. It was an open plea, which means the lawyers for both sides did not agree on a sentence.
Aggravated assault carries a maximum of 10 years in prison. Coffin could face an additional year if convicted of violating the conditions of his release.
