“City to get orchestra” is the prominent headline on the front page of the Sun Journal’s Jan. 6 issue and again as a subject for editorial comment in the Jan. 8 paper, suggesting to all a cause for celebration.

Yes, the addition of anything related to the arts in this community is a good reason for revelry. But what about the presence and contributions over the years of the Androscoggin Valley Community Orchestra, the Maine Chamber Ensemble or the Bates College Orchestra? Are these groups not orchestras operating within the city?

Is it a case where the author of the article was unaware of the existence of these other musical organizations? Or was it a decision by the editorial staff of the newspaper to intentionally ignore them altogether?

The statement of a “permanent home” in Lewiston is a misleading one. The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra has a home already in Topsham. Like the Maine Chamber Ensemble has looked to other communities for additional performance venues, so is this move by the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra a similar expansion. Its base of operations will not be in Lewiston.

I am just puzzled why all of a sudden there has been so much media attention accorded this particular group when it can often be a struggle to get adequate exposure.

There has been ongoing classical music orchestral activity in the Twin Cities long before this recent announcement by the newspaper. It is the responsibility of the Sun Journal to recognize this fact.
