PERU – Selectmen meeting Monday gave their signed approval to a town vote on the proposed merger with SAD 21.

The balloting is set for Feb. 24, at which time Peru residents will also elect four members to a new SAD 21 board of directors. The new board will only be formed if Peru and current SAD 21 towns approve the merger.

Terms for Peru’s representatives on the new board would be staggered so that one director would serve one year, one director would serve two years and two directors three years.

If and when they are elected, directors would draw lots to determine the length of their terms. Nomination papers for prospective directors will be available at the town office beginning Jan. 13 and are due by Jan. 26.

An informational meeting on the proposed merger will be held at Peru Elementary School at 6 p.m. Jan. 28. That will be followed by a public hearing on the school referendum vote scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 11. Absentee ballots will be available beginning Feb. 2.

Nomination papers are available for the positions of selectman, assessor, overseer of the poor, and two school committee members. Each position has a three-year term.

The deadline for filing papers is Jan. 30.
