LEWISTON – Two training sessions for people in the Lewiston-Auburn area who are interested in volunteering with the American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery program will be held at the Central Maine Medical Center at the following times:
• From 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Conference Room F.
• From 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Conference Room D.
More than 7,000 Maine residents are living with cancer. Because of advances in medical research, there will be cures for many.
Getting to the cure, however, can sometimes be a problem. The Road to Recovery program builds a network of volunteer drivers to provide cancer patients with transportation to and from treatments.
Cancer patients are often too sick to drive themselves to treatment appointments and many don’t have friends or family members who can drive them each time. Some treatments may take place as often as five times a week for six weeks.
Elderly cancer patients are especially in need of rides to treatment. The society is recruiting volunteers to ensure that all cancer patients have transportation when they need it.
People with a car and some spare time, by volunteering for the program, can help someone keep an important appointment.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
