An misleading headline appeared in the Jan. 4 edition of the Sun Journal, “City To Get Orchestra.” Proper journalistic technique and accuracy would have resulted in a headline that read “City Gets Another Orchestra.”

The Maine Music Society, consisting of the Androscoggin Chorale and the Maine Chamber Ensemble (composed of professional musicians), has been based in Lewiston since 1991. Under the direction of Peter Frewen, both ensembles have performed throughout western Maine and each year perform an average of six concerts in Lewiston. In addition, the Maine Music Society provides educational programs each fall to local middle school students.

In fact, the Androscoggin Chorale and the Maine Chamber Ensemble were slated to perform the inaugural concert at the recently renovated Franco-American Center on Dec. 7. Unfortunately, the weather prevented this, but a rescheduled concert was performed on Dec. 21 to a sold-out audience numbering approximately 400. It is sad that the Sun Journal was not present at this performance and disappointing that this event did not merit a front-page headline.

I am a member of the Androscoggin Chorale and a financial supporter of the Maine Music Society. I welcome the addition of another ensemble providing live performance of classical music, but the blatant disregard by this publication of an organization that has been serving this area for 13 years borders on insulting.
