PARIS – Town Manager Steve McAllister is conducting a survey to see if residents would use debit cards to pay taxes and transact other town business.
“If I get a positive response, I plan to bring the idea to selectmen,” McAllister said Wednesday.
He realizes it would probably be too expensive for the town to offer to allow payment by credit card, because of fees the town would have to pay to credit card companies.
Debit card payments, with the money deducted immediately from the person’s regular checking account, would cost about 50 cents per transaction, he said.
McAllister said use of debit cards would be more efficient for the town and taxpayers alike.
