LEWISTON – An independent documentary film about Somali immigration to Lewiston, Mayor Raymond’s letter to the Somali community, and the Many and One Rally will be screened for the first time in Maine at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Lewiston Middle School.
The special screening of “The Letter,” a feature-length film, is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m. Seating is first-come, first-served.
The movie will be followed by a discussion to allow Lewiston and Auburn residents to continue the cross-cultural dialogues that began a year ago. The screening is part of the Many & One Coalition’s Ten Days of Community, Diversity and Justice, which kicked off Jan. 10 with a celebration.
According to Hamzeh Mystique Films, the documentary “probes the reactions of city officials and citizens to the sudden influx of 1,000 former Somali refugees” and “offers a topical, comprehensive look at the dynamics of immigration many cities and countries worldwide now confront in this age of ‘globalization’ and the clash of alien cultures and religions that inevitably follows.”
