As a resident of Lewiston for almost 20 years and having grown up in Auburn, I have seen this community continue to be stomped, kicked, dragged and generally abused by others for their own gains. Our best intentions are, in fact, best intentions, but we continue to assume that others will follow through on promises. Yet time after time we get that swift kick in the pants.

I write this in regard to the ongoing issues with the Central Maine Civic Center, and while saddened by where we now stand in this mess, I am encouraged that the city will be taking over the property and managing it for the future.

First, to all our city leaders and community friends, take the sign off your back that says “Kick Me,” and ask yourselves what’s the worst that could happen when we make these decisions, and then let’s make sure there are plans to protect the city should the worst happen.

Second, the only way the civic center will be profitable is if the doors are open. If we are not open to various events we will close the doors on financial freedom. Spend the money to make it a venue people want to come to and then book the events people want to see.

Third, take risk. Be willing to try new events and let the community offer suggestions on use of the facility.
